What is Zoloft or Sertraline?

ZOLOFT is an antidepressant medication which belongs to a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This medication is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic attacks, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is also used to relieve the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), including mood swings, irritability, bloating, and breast tenderness. ZOLOFT affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression, panic, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

Take ZOLOFT exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. ZOLOFT tablets may be taken with or without food. For optimal results, patients should try to take the medicine at the same time each day.

Dosage Zoloft and method of administration

The starting dose is 50 mg/day. If the effect is insufficient, the dosage may be increased

to a maximum dosage of 200 mg/day. Dose increases should be made gradually in 50 mg increments every two weeks until a therapeutic effect is achieved. At adequate dosage, an antidepressant effect will occur only after 2-4 weeks of treatment. If at maximum dosage no effect has yet been achieved, further continuation of therapy is pointless.

  • Since the elimination half-life is prolonged in patients over 70 years of age, it is recommended that in elderly persons the dosage of sertraline be kept as low as possible. In patients with renal dysfunction who are not on dialysis, the dose does not need to be adjusted.
  • The use of sertraline in patients on haemodialysis is not recommended. In patients with (severe) hepatic impairment it is still unclear whether a dose adjustment is necessary or not. The use of sertraline in patients with severe hepatic insufficiency is therefore advised against.

Before using ZOLOFT, patients should be aware of essential safety information that may affect them. Speak to your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

  • dangerous drug interaction could occur, leading to serious side effects
  • patients may have thoughts about suicide when they start taking ZOLOFT, especially those under 24 years old
  • this medication may alter your mood or symptoms
  • patients should not start or stop taking Zoloft during pregnancy without your doctor’s advice
  • tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant while taking ZOLOFT because it can cause heart defects or serious lung problems in a newborn if you take the medication during pregnancy
  • do not use ZOLOFT without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby
  • ZOLOFT can cause patients to have a false positive drug screening test. If you provide a urine sample for drug screening, tell the laboratory staff that you are taking ZOLOFT
  • if you stop taking ZOLOFT, you may have a relapse of depression

To make sure you can safely take ZOLOFT, tell your doctor if you have any of these conditions:

  • liver or kidney disease
  • seizures or epilepsy
  • a bleeding or blood clotting disorder
  • bipolar disorder (manic depression)
  • a history of drug abuse or suicidal thoughts

Can I stop taking Zoloft just like that?

  • Preferably stop slowly over a period of four weeks. After stopping suddenly, some people experience anxiety, dizziness, vertigo, headaches, nausea and sweating. These symptoms often occur only one to four days after sudden withdrawal and are over within three weeks. Not everyone experiences many withdrawal symptoms. Therefore, see how you react if you reduce the dosage slightly. If you do not feel any discomfort, you can cut down more quickly. Ask your doctor for advice.

If you are taking this medicine for depression: be aware that the effect of sertraline only reaches its maximum after about six weeks, and that you will need to continue taking the medicine for at least another six months.
  • If you stop earlier you are more likely to have the depression return. If you are taking this medicine for depression, it is often tapered over a longer period of time to prevent the symptoms of the depression from coming back. If you are taking this medicine for panic disorder or anxiety, you should often taper off over several months. This will prevent the symptoms from coming back.
