What is Clomid used for?
Clomid tablets are used to treat infertility in women who have problems conceiving because their ovaries are not working properly and are not ovulating (a condition known as anovulation), but who have no other obvious cause of infertility and whose partner is fertile. Clomid tablets restore the normal function of the ovaries, allowing an egg to mature and be released (ovulation), which can then be fertilized. Clomid tablets are also used to restore the normal menstrual cycle in women with irregular ovulation or amenorrhea due to various causes, such as taking oral contraceptives or polycystic ovary syndrome. Clomid tablets are also used to treat male infertility by increasing sperm production in men with low sperm count (but only at a lower dose of 25 mg).
How does Clomid work?
Clomid tablets contain clomiphene, which is a selective estrogen receptor modulator and binds to the estrogen receptor in the hypothalamus (brain control center), preventing the negative feedback action of estrogen. When estrogen levels are low, the hypothalamus is stimulated to produce gonadotropins which in turn stimulate the release of FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone) from the pituitary gland (hormone control center in the brain), which are necessary for ovulation and work by stimulating the growth and maturation of egg follicles in the ovaries.
When the follicle is fully mature, it ruptures and releases the egg, which is ovulation. The ruptured, mature follicle called the corpus luteum also produces the hormone progesterone, which helps the endometrium (lining of the uterus) mature ready for conception. The clomiphene in Clomid tablets tricks the body into responding as if estrogen levels are low, restoring hormonal imbalance and “starting” the process that leads to ovulation. The action of clomiphene can cause the release of more than one egg at a time (multiple ovulations), increasing the chances of twins.
What does Clomid contain?
Clomid tablets contain clomiphene citrate, used to treat infertility in women by restoring ovulation.
What are the side effects of Clomid?
Clomid tablets are generally well tolerated and side effects are generally related to taking high doses. The most commonly reported side effects of taking Clomid tablets include: facial redness, mild abdominal pain or discomfort, swelling, enlarged ovaries, and blurred vision. Less frequently reported symptoms included nausea or vomiting, increased nervous tension, depression, fatigue, dizziness or lightheadedness, insomnia, headache, breast pain, heavier menstrual periods, intramenstrual spotting (bleeding between periods), increased weight loss, urticaria (hives), allergic dermatitis, increased urinary frequencies and moderate reversible hair loss.
When should not Clomid be used?
You should not use Clomid tablets if:
- are already pregnant, as clomiphene can cause birth defects
- have liver disease
- have abnormal uterine bleeding
- suffer from depression
- have enlarged ovaries or ovarian cysts that are not due to polycystic ovary disease
How should Clomid be taken?
You should take your Clomid tablets once a day with or without food at the same time each day, for 5 days, starting on the fifth day of the menstrual cycle. If you have not ovulated after 5 days of treatment, your doctor may recommend another course of treatment and your dose may be increased.
How long should you take Clomid?
You should take your Clomid tablets for a full 5-day treatment cycle, which can be repeated if ovulation has not been achieved.
Missed dose of Clomid
If you miss a dose of Clomid tablets, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is time for the next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.
How should Clomid be stored?
You should store your Clomid tablets in a cool, dry place below 25 ° C, protected from light and moisture.
